Course Description:
This introductory course provides a broad introduction to the Java programming language and the related knowledge necessary to program in Java. Coverage includes:
· Overview of Java: its importance, characteristics, and uses.
· Java language basics.
· Compiling and executing programs with the JavaSoft Java Development Kit (JDK).
· Introduction to the Object Model and Object Oriented Programming.
· Creating stand-alone Java applications.
· Creating Java applets and enhancing Web pages with the HTML <APPLET> tag.
· Using the AWT (Abstract Window Toolkit) to create graphical user interfaces.
· Advanced Java topics, including networking and streams.
· Other Java API libraries, such as the language and utility class libraries.

Course Format:
The course is a fast-paced, hands-on, interactive class. It consists of 50% lecture - 50% hands-on exercises. Labs are structured for different skill levels so that the more advanced students will not be bored. However, it is suggested that all students have a similar programming expertise — unbalanced classes are more difficult for both novice and expert students.

Course Materials:
Each student will receive a complete printed course workbook which includes all the material covered in the class, and all exercises with solutions.

Course Length:
Our standard course length is 5 days. Custom formats are available.

Course Time:
Our standard time is 9:00AM - 4:30PM daily with a 15-minute morning break, a 1-hour lunch break and a 15-minute afternoon break.

Student Prerequisites:
Working knowledge (6+ months experience) of a procedural language such as C, C++, Basic, COBOL is preferred. Classes where students are without this level of experience may not cover all the advanced topics. Again, it is preferred that all students be at approximately the same level of programming experience.

Class Size:
It is preferable that the class size be no larger than 12 students, however we require that the class size be no larger than 15 students.

Each student shall have a workstation that fulfills the following requirements:

Recommended Hardware:
· One of the following:
· Intel based machine (Pentium 75MHz or better) running Windows NT 3.51 or later (preferred).
· Intel based machine (Pentium 75MHz or better) running Windows 95.
· SPARC machine running Solaris 2.x.
· 16 MB RAM.
· Netscape Navigator v 2.02 or newer. Freely downloadable for evaluation from Netscape at http://home.netscape.com

Recommended Software:
· Java JDK (Java development kit). Freely downloadable from http://www.javasoft.com. Available for all major platforms.
· The Symantec Café Java IDE (http://cafe.symantec.com/) is recommended for all Windows platforms. Approximately $100 per station.
· The Java Workshop (available for evaluation from http://www.javasoft.com) is recommended for non-Windows platforms.

Expenses: On-site client shall pay for all normal expenses incurred by the instructor including:
· Hotel expenses
· Food expenses
· Round-trip travel
· Rental car while in surrounding on-site city district

Payment Terms: 50% due upon purchase of on-site class; remaining 50% due prior to start date of the class. Late payments will incur a 1.5% finance charge. Application for company credit is available.
